This morning Mayor Harrell unveiled a new recruitment and retention plan to address the dramatic drop in SPD officers over the past two years.
The plan centers on four key themes:
- Make hiring easier, faster and more efficient;
- Attract top recruits with competitive compensation;
- Recruit candidates committed to the community;
- Retain officers through opportunities and appreciation.
According to a press release issued by the Mayor’s Office, the Mayor is also transmitting to the City Council legislation that would codify details of the plan that require the Council’s approval. That would include at the very least budget allocations (and re-allocations) and approval of proposed hiring bonuses for new recruits and lateral transfers from other departments.
