SDOT has a new “Even Better Bike Lanes” program to improve the condition and maintenance of existing bike lanes (as it continues to build out more bike lanes across the city).
In a blog post, the agency describes the different options for materials it can use to provide a barrier between vehicle lanes and bike lanes. It also has an online poll where you can provide input on where it should test new materials.
Among the materials options — and to be clear it will probably use a mix of them in different places depending on specific conditions — are “armadillos.” Emergency vehicles can drive over them, but they are more durable than plastic vertical posts.
